Top 5 fine dine restaurants in Doha

Lets look at some of the best of fine dining in Doha

La Mer at The Ritz-Carlton

La Mer is a restaurant you book for the view first, and the food second. That's not to say the food isn't divine, but situated on the 23rd floor of The Ritz-Carlton with its floor to ceiling windows, the vista extends out across the Gulf's coast and onto the city's skyline.

A joint seafood and steak restaurant, La Mer has some chic interior design to go with its contemporary cuisine. The Wagyu beef with foie gras and black truffle, seafood tortellini or the reef and beef - lobster and a 120g strip loin - should leave your stomach as content as your field of vision. For something more intimate, book the private dining room, Le Ciel, or finish your night with drinks in Level 23 - the restaurant's upscale bar.

Hakkasan at the St. Regis

With branches also in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the Hakkasan group has embedded its roots firmly in the Gulf. Doha's venue at the St. Regis maintains the classic interior styling the chain has become known for, fusing traditional Chinese design with modern aesthetics. Inside may be enticing but Hakkasan's outdoor terrace is not to be sniffed at. A very unique setup in this architectural city, lush greenery borders comfortable seating with open air views.

The Ling-Ling Lounge is what you will require for private parties or work events. As has always been the case though, the food is Hakkasan's crowning glory. Good luck choosing between the black cod with XO sauce, Peking duck with Royal Beluga caviar, Wagyu beef or silver cod with Sha Cha and truffle - to name just a few of our favorites.

Gordon Ramsay at the St. Regis

As if stepping into a Georgian Townhouse in Mayfair, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has not only captured the sense of London's poshest district, but he's created a menu that is filled with wonderful British classics. Start with a drink in The Conservatory before walking into the avant-garde restaurant, filled with vivid colours and creative styling; we warn you that romance will inevitably be in the air.

Better still, arrive in style with one of the hotel's Rolls-Royce cars delivering you directly to the restaurant's private lift for a champagne welcome. Pan-roasted wild sea bass with truffle sauce, blue lobster on rock salt or butter truffle guinea fowl are all on the 'standard menu'. Egg yolk ravioli and cold seared langoustines are on the 'menu prestige'

Market by Jean-Georges at the W Doha

Hoarding awards since it opened its doors in 2012, Market is a funky and modern restaurant with a bustling atmosphere. It's cuisine of high-end European and Arabic food with a twist has proven extremely popular ever since Jean-Georges Vongerichten brought his chain of restaurants to the city. The restaurant is designed in several small areas, giving it a more intimate feel than if it was one big open space.

Hundreds of jars filled with spices and aromas are scattered throughout the venue, that, along with the close proximity of tables, helps to create the concept's 'market' feel. The menu is balanced between fine dining and the higher-end of casual, including some fantastic sushi and gourmet options. Be sure to book in advance - like all good markets, this one is busy on a weekend.

Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor at Meliá Doha

With a branch already in Meliá's Dubai hotel, it wasn't a surprise when Meliá Doha opened its own Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor earlier this year. The intimate restaurant, with its white tablecloths and wooden finishings, showcases its 'art on a plate' presentation, fusing food with entertainment. The outdoor terrace offers fantastic views of Doha's West Bay, while the interior has a stylish avant-garde interior.

On the menu, Kapoor's trademark of contemporary dishes with strong traditional influences laden the menu, including the tandoori wasabi lobster, tandoori balchao prawns and Kandhari crab aur jungle scallops. There are also a number of vegetarian dishes on the menu, including a vegetarian kebab and spinach and green pea patties with mascarpone cheese lava

A Gourmet Guide to Doha: The 10 Best Restaurants & Eateries

Despite Qatar being a small country just off the Arabian peninsula, its position in the world both economically and culturally has brought with it a treat of diverse and multicultural cuisines. The country’s capital, Doha, is home to a number of local and international restaurants catering to all tastes. We revisit Doha to find out whether its cuisine is still world class.

The Cellar

Opened in 2010, the Cellar has grown in recognition and is now one of the most popular restaurants in Doha. The simple yet elegant décor is matched by its fine selection of Mediterranean tapas. The wine list, as you’d expect, is extensive and thoughtfully complements the flavours of the Spanish dishes. On Tuesdays, the all-you-can-eat tapas with three glasses of wine is a very reasonable treat. Amongst other exquisite dishes, the tapas includes grilled salmon with fennel and orange, oven-baked hammour with chickpea puree, tuna tartar with avocado, and herb crusted mussels.

Ipanema

Ipanema is an exciting Brazilian restaurant whose concept is to offer guests an all-you-can-eat experience. There is a buffet of straight-forward pastas and salads, but the main draw for the crowds is the Brazilian churrascaria, which offers diners over a dozen cuts of grilled Brazilian meat on skewers. Cooked on a traditional oven pit, guests can choose from tender picanha, linguiça, char-grilled chicken or lamb. With a vibrant and lively atmosphere the restaurant comes alive at night, with a live band playing Brazilian songs as you eat.

Layali

Layali is often cited as the best Lebaneserestaurant in Qatar, even winning the Best Middle Eastern Cuisine Award from Time Out Doha magazine in 2012. Encapsulating all the best bits of Arabic cuisine, Layali combines great food, warm hospitality, and relaxing shishas in a setting akin to a Moorish palace. As the midday sun cools off slightly, Layali’s atmosphere transforms into a buzzing hub packed with locals and tourists alike. The food includes salads, cold and hot mezze, charcoal grills and a wide selection of seafood, completed with traditional Lebanese coffee and desserts. As a perfect accompaniment to the great food, there is live tarab music, with the oud taking centre stage. For a true Arabic experience in a city often striving for Western refinement, Layali is the perfect place to relax in style.

Mykonos

Mykonos is an authentic Greek restaurant close to Doha’s waterfront, with some of the best views in the city. Joining the already impressive list of restaurants in the InterContinental Hotel, Mykonos cooks up a selection of traditional Greek dishes in the relaxing Mediterranean-themed interior. The menu includes a range of traditional dishes, from perfectly dressed salads, taramosalata and tzatziki to moussaka. Coming highly recommended are the meat skewers marinated with a creamy and aromatic tzatziki dip. As it is part of a hotel complex the restaurant can serve alcohol, and does so to full effect through its extensive cocktail menu.

Prime Steakhouse

Prime is an essential destination for all steak lovers, and was recently awarded Doha's No.1 Steakhouse by Time Out in 2013.The restaurant’s ethos is to serve big and bold dishes with a consistently fine selection of different cuts of meat cooked to perfection. Customers choose four cuts: tenderloin, rib-eye, T-bone and striploin from USA Prime, Australian Kobe, or Wagyu. The Wagyu steak is one of the finest in theMiddle East, and comes highly recommended. As well as beef steaks, a wider selection of dishes are available, including foie gras, rack of lamb, beef carpaccio and sea bass.

Ric’s Kountry Kitchen

For a truly indulgent experience, visitors to Qatar are recommended to visit Ric’s Kountry Kitchen. A country kitchen would have connotations of a small restaurant with peaceful surroundings; however, thisAmerican diner isn’t what you would expect at all. Located in downtown Doha, Ric’s has been an institution in Doha since it opened in 1997, and as a result, is one of the oldest restaurants in the country. The feel-good menu is a pleasingly gluttonous affair, but unlike the greasy burgers you would expect from a diner, everything, including the burger buns, is homemade. Expect big burgers, traditional pancakes, tender steaks, big breakfasts and of course, Ric’s famous apple pie. Ric’s is popular with both locals and expatriates, thanks to its friendly atmosphere typical of a diner in the States.

Quisine by Guy Savoy

This restaurant, run by the Michelin star chef Guy Savoy, is a culinary delight in the heart of Doha. The minimalist interior of the restaurant is detailed with sophisticated touches such as the ‘wall of flames’, which adds a romantic atmosphere to the cosy space. The food is inspired by a number of international cuisines, presented in a wholly unique style. The artichoke and black truffle soup, layered brioche with mushrooms and truffles is an exquisitely presented and indulgent treat.

Ruby Wu’s

Inside Doha’s Radisson Blu Hotel, it comes as some surprise to hear that there is a small Chinatown. Creating authentically traditional Chinese cuisine, Ruby Wu’s specialities include steamed chicken and shrimps dumpling (siew mei) and its Szechuan stir-fried prawns and cashew nuts. Located close to some of Doha’s best bars, the restaurant is an ideal stop-off before a night out. Serving traditional Chinese dishes from various regions reimagined for western tastes, the service is attentive and, considering prices in Qatar, it is also really good value for money.

Saffron Lounge

Winning best Indian restaurant of the year for four consecutive years, Saffron is regularly cited as one of the best Indian restaurants in the whole of Qatar. Set up in 2009 by Michelin star Chef Vineet Bhatia, the restaurant cooks up a combination of regional dishes. The interior is clad with hues of red, reflecting the colours seen in the spicy and vibrant dishes. One dish in particular, the finger tandoori lamb chops with corn korma biryani rice and pomegranate and mint raita, comes highly recommended. Afterwards, the tea lounge offers a variety of tea blends, a welcomed palate cleanser after the flavoursome main.

Vine

Vine mixes the tranquility of Arabian hospitality with everything great about international cuisine. The white marbled interior of the elegant restaurant is illuminated through high-arched windows and is an ideal place to relax in the evening. Fresh ingredients are used to create its international buffet, with a huge number of items on the menu. Vine is best known for its Friday Brunch BBQ, which cooks some of the best ribs in town. Combined with the good food, the sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf on the terrace is a perfect way to start your weekend.

Qatar - Food Finds

Qatar has seemingly endless options for food, much of it excellent. If you would like European cuisine in a fancy setting, visit a hotel like the Ramada or the Marriott, both of which also offer excellent sushi and the choice of having drinks with your meal (the only restaurants in town that can do this are in the major hotels), but at a steep price. Authentic and delicious Indian buffets in Doha is found throughout the city, ranging from family oriented places to very basic eateries catering to the Indian and Pakistani workers. You may attract some curious stares in the worker eateries, but the management will almost always be extremely welcoming, and the food is very inexpensive.

For excellent and truly thai restaurants in doha, try either Thai Twin (near the Doha Petrol Station and the computer souqs) or Thai Snacks (on Marqab St.), and be sure to sample the delicious spicy papaya salad at either location, but be careful, if you ask them to make it spicy, expect for it to burn.

Middle Eastern cuisine is everywhere as well, and in many forms- kebabs, breads, hummus, the list goes on. It can be purchased on the cheap from a take-out (many of which look quite unimpressive, but serve awesome food) or from a fancier place, like the wonderful Layali (near Chili's in the 'Cholesterol Corner' area) that serves gourmet Lebanese food and has hookahs with flavored tobacco. Refined Persian cuisine is available for reasonable prices in the royally-appointed Ras Al-Nasa`a Restaurant on the Corniche (don't miss the cathedral-like rest rooms).

Don't be afraid to venture into the Souqs looking for a meal; it will be a unique experience in an authentic setting, and although some of the places you see may look rundown, that's just the area in general, and the food will be probably be quite good. If you are in a funny kind of mood, you can try a McArabia- McDonald's Middle Eastern sandwich available only in the region.

It is forbidden to bring alcohol in to the country as a tourist; at Doha airport customs xray bags and will confiscate any bottles of alcoholic drink. They will issue a receipt valid for 2 weeks to reclaim the alcohol on exit from the country.
